Kumite (sparring) and Sport Karate

Individuals begin training in a traditional martial art for many different reasons; physical conditioning, stress relief, practical self defense, and, learning time-honored, effective, and  winning fighting skills.

 

Until Master Ohtsuka's intervention in the early 1940's, sparring sessions in traditional dojos in Japan were usually followed by sessions at the doctor afterwards. Injuries were as expected as exhaustion, until he introduced the practice of Kumite; pre-arranged sparring drills wearing modified kendo pads for protection. Since that modification, Kumite and the development of controlled fighting skills has become as much a part of traditional karate dojos as wearing your gi and obi.

 

At Bushido Dojo Joelton, Sensei Brown is regarded as the leading authority on kumite for our Federation, as well as holding World Championship records for more than twenty years. His experience, skill and techniques are shared by his sons, Senseis Melvin Brown III, Joshua Brown, Matthew Brown, and his daughter, Sensei Jennifer Spillers, all kumite champions in their own right, as well as gifted instructors. Their skill in preparing students for tournament competition is without equal, and

 

Students young and old, veteran and new member, will find that their kumite training, like all other aspects of your training, is rigorous, rewarding, frustrating, challenging, fun, and under Sensei Brown's instruction, essential to your experience as a Bushido Karateka.

 

Below are the basic combination techniques and the partner kumite kata drills you will be learning:

ATTACK GYAKUTSUKI – Jumping front hand/reverse punch

       
KETTE JUNTSUKI NO TSUKOMI – Low front snap kick/front lunge punch    

STUTTER GYAKUTSUKI – Lunging front punch/reverse punch/step forward reverse punch

       
KETTE GYAKUTSUKI – Front snap kick/reverse punch     GYAKUTSUKI MAEWASHIGERI– Reverse punch/roundhouse kick

Following Ohtsuka Sensei's formal establishment of Wado Ryu, his greatest contribution to Karatedo may be his development of the Kihon Kumite Katas. Wholly his own, the Kihon Kumite Katas are a purity of synthesis; blending of the fluidity of Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu and the linear techniques of Okinawan karate, creating a series of formal exercises genuinely unique among all styles of karate. Originally believed to have encompassed 36 separate exercises, practice today is generally limited to 10, with the remaining 26 rarely performed. The ten are:
